Lloyd and Shannon,
When I used OmniPage, I also accessed it a lot from inside Microsoft Word. It
put entries on Word's File menu that made scanning
a document directly into Word very easy. I don't know how that is incorporated
with the Microsoft Office ribbon, though, but if
such an option is still available, it is a pretty nice approach.
To add a little to what you already accurately stated, when you first get OmniPage, it
might be necessary to modify a "Work Flow"
to get things to work just as you would like them to work. Once you have the "Work
Flow" set up, you will be able to run it from
the Process menu as Lloyd has already said without doing a lot of modifying
each time. However, seeing if Omnipage can be
accessed from within Word and checking to see what Omnipage options there might
be on PDF documents from within Windows Explorer
as he suggests can save you a lot of time.
I also believe that OmniPage still comes with PDF Converter which might still
be a separate application. One should check to see
if that is the case as well if one is going to convert a lot of PDF files.
Best regards,
Steve Jacobson

Work with the Process menu, Alt-P. On this menu, there are pull-down menus for
selecting the source, controlling the
recognition, and selecting export options. If you are specifically working
with PDF files, you can set the source selection to be
files instead of a scanner. Recognition options include whether this is likely
to be a form, a spreadsheet, in columns, or
automatic (let OmniPage decide). For output you can select several file types,
including audio files. Once you have things set
up according to your preferences, you can use ctrl-1, ctrl-2 and ctrl-3 to
perform the three steps. If you are going to read your
recognition results inside Omnipage, you may need to click inside a certain
area before a cursor can appear. I usually export to
Word DOC or DOCX format.
Before you try all of this stuff, try this: Find a PDF file you want to open
using Windows Explorer. Use the Applications key
(context menu key) to see what you can do with this file. If Omnipage is
installed properly, you should see a pulldown menu of
choices for conversion of the file. For this to work, Omnipage will be started
during the processing of the PDF, so it takes some
time, depending on the number of pages and their complexity.
I like Omnipage a lot. It is not quite as automatic as Kurzweil or OpenBook,
but it can produce any kind of file you would want
with industrial-strength accuracy. It is never perfect, and sometimes
experimentation is needed to determine the best settings to
use.
