Hi. I'm glad I could help a bit and that the record is finally being
set straight. It's really sad that some rehab counselors are convinced
that you must spend so much money for a screenreader, when you've got
one right there under your nose that's absolutely free. Unfortunately
the idea seems to be if it's free, it probably isn't even
worth considering. I've actually talked to folks who were discouraged
from using Window-eyes. They were told that it was an inferior product,
that it didn't work with applications that it clearly does, and it just
wasn't even worth looking at. Luckily, these folks were persistant and
they got what they wanted. I've also spoken to a few friends who were
pretty avid users of the other screenreaders, and since the Window-eyes
for Office offer came about, a bunch of them have been checking it out,
and have actually really enjoyed it and in a few cases have actually
switched to it full-time.
So there is some good news there. I'm glad people are taking
Window-eyes a bit more seriously.

I Want to thank all those who have responded to this thread, In particular those
of you who are New, Win-Eyes users because of the MS-Office offer, and to Doug.
I have forwarded a selection of the responses to the appropriate Tech-users'
group, and have received almost immediate back-peddling responses over the
phone. Good job, folks!

Subject: Re: Functionality of the MS-Office Version of Win-Eyes
Louis,
As everyone on the list has stated, this is not the case. The Office version of
Window-Eyes works with everything the full retail copy does.
The windoweyesforoffice.com web page talks about the only differences.
These are the default synthesizers, support, CD, print material. But the
functionality of Window-Eyes is identical.
There is no way a GW Micro representative would ever say the Office version only
works with Office and nothing else.
Feel free to have these people contact us directly or visit the
windoweyesforoffice.com web page.
Regards,
Doug

Yesterday, at a tech-user's meeting in NH, the Win-Eyes version that
is available with MS-Office was discussed, and we were told that it
does not work in all programs, only within the Office suite, and, for
example, it does not work when using Notepad or Wordpad, for instance.
I would really like to know if this is true. I am a long-time
Win-Eyes user, and of course, spoke up for my Win-Eyes, but we are
definitely in the minority up here, so I was quickly squelched. I was
told they had sat in and asked questions at the Webinar led by GW and
had pinned them down on this point. So, GW, is this true? If I bought
a new computer with an acceptable version of Office on it, would I
discover that I had no speech as soon as I brought up Wordpad or
Notepad, or How about in Windows Explorer!? This surely does not fit
my first impression of this Microsoft/GW offer. It wouldn't affect
me; I'll probably always pay for my copy, because I like Win-Eyes, and believe
in supporting the company producing it, but I'd like to know my facts when I
open my mouth and put my foot in it!
