Hi Terri, It is a good idea to ask for the material ahead of time. If they give it to you in hardcopy, you will of course need to scan it and put it into a Word doc or something that you can access. Ideally, they will be able to provide you with an electronic copy of the PowerPoint. As described earlier by someone on this list you can then convert the PowerPoint to a Word doc. If the PowerPoint has been created using graphics, such as word art or some type of text boxes, this conversion process will not be all that successful for you.
If you have not taken a class in a while, you might want to practice your note taking skills ahead of time. You might also find it helpful to record the class as a back up to your written notes in case a problem comes up with taking the notes yourself. Now whether or not you can record with your BS while taking notes in the work processor and flipping back and forth between your notes and the converted PowerPoint file, I do not know. I have no experience using the recording feature on my Voice Sense, but I switch between 2 word processor documents on frequent occasions. Keep in mind that maybe asking for a person to take notes for you on a laptop as an accommodation is an option. Will you be able to take the test on a computer? Will the computer be set up with a screen reader, or will you be using your BS as the screen reader and/or braille display? Good Luck with the class. Is it possible to convert the material ahead of time into text so I could read it with my BSP? Does anyone have a text version of the material?
