If the POP and SMTP servers are reachable through the wireless connection, they'll be used. Consider yourself lucky! My experience is that while POP servers are reachable and you can get mail, an SMTP server is often harder to access because it wants you to be logged onto a certain network. And some wireless connections turn off email access altogether, and you're forced to use a web interface.
