I think what you are referring to as the "lock" mode is called the "typing"
mode. When typing mode is turned on, qwerty users can press f5 to toggle
the voice on and off. To simply interrupt the speech, you must turn off
typing mode and then you can press the control key.
I have always preferred qwerty keyboards for notetakers and it wasn't hard
for me to get used to the smaller keyboards. I've used qwerty notetakers
since 1995, when the Keynote Companions came out. I have long, narrow
fingers. But I can't stand laptop keyboards because they have less keys
than a 104 keyboard.
If you prefer typing but you don't like small keyboards, you can plug an
external usb keyboard into your BSP.
