hello, regarding power cycling the cable modem to switch it between different devices, this is normal for modems such as what Comcast uses. This is because the modems usually remember the MAC address of your Ethernet port on which ever device is connected to it. So when you switch it out, you need to power cycle it in order for the modem to see the new MAC address and then assign it an IP. You usually don't have to do with with routers since they are smarter than your average bear, I mean, modem.
