The problem is that you're script is currently at version 1.89, and
you're trying to update to 1.8.11, which is less than the current
version. You can't do that. You have to update to something greater than
1.89.

Thanks for the ideas Jeff.
unfortunately, I'm trying from both an xp pc and a vista pc; from both
IE 7 and IE 8.
I looked at the main script list of recently updated scripts, and it
shows only me as having had one updated recently (and what I take is
Aaron's attempt also), so that might explain why no one else has
mentioned it.
it's very odd that it shows my script as being updated, but none of
the info (like the version number) was saved or updated.
tomorrow (too late tonight), I'll try downloading the .wepm and see
what I get, just to get the idea that it's not saving any database
updates.
otherwise, I'll have to wait til someone who isn't a priviledged user
on this system tries an update.

Chip,
By any chance, are you attempting to update from a Vista machine?
I have noticed a difference from XP and Vista when updating a script.
With XP, you just fill out the form, and when you get to the place to
type in the package .wepm file name you just type it in.
With vista, you have to press enter, and then you can type in the
.wepm package name.
I don't know if this helps, but it caused me some trouble until I
figured it out.

I'm not able to duplicate any problems with updating scripts, and I've
not had any other reports of any problems.

Hi Aaron,
Friday afternoon, twice, I tried, and appeared to succeed, in posting a
script update to the MS Word script, raising it to version 1.8.10. however,
even though I was told it succeeded, nothing is changing on the script page
or the xml info.
thanks for looking into this.
