good point about the localization; also, I did wonder if a braille only user
would have the screen.voice set to true just like a speech user?

I was thinking it's better to figure the environment out rather than count
on the user to configure things properly, but it may not be possible in this
case, so you're probably right and I should get them to do so.

Why wouldn't you just make this setting be something specific to your
script, rather than trying to divine the user's intent from his other
settings?

Also, note that the synthesizer description can be localized, so your
proposal might only work on current English-language versions of
Window-Eyes.
