Thanks much David for the tip, but I don't think it will do this.  I'm not
positive that the problem isn't me, but it gives a vague error message (just
saying there was an error) each time that I try converting .avi files to any
other format (even though it will play them).

Guess I'll have to do some real work and search the web.

I would suggest for you to give MaPlEr from
    http://mar-dy.com
a try. It should give you the chance of making .avi into .mp3; although I
haven't tested that particular conversion myself, since I don't have any
.avi files at hand.

If you go to the above website, and choose the first link, then scroll down
to the download link, you will get a fully functional demo, with no other
time limit, than that it will speak out a message every 90 seconds. And if
you need any further help in figuring how to do the conversion, drop me a
message at

and I will walk you through. The player is 100% accessible, being developed
by visually impaired staff.
