Thanks much David for the tip, but I don't think it will do this. I'm not positive that the problem isn't me, but it gives a vague error message (just saying there was an error) each time that I try converting .avi files to any other format (even though it will play them).

It should give you the chance of making .avi into .mp3; although I haven't tested that particular conversion myself, since I don't have any .avi files at hand.
