Hi Rick,

The 1.1 version is uploaded there on the scripting web site.
In this program I go directly to the web page you are on in the list. I
then extract the text or the entire page from the web site.
Once that is downloaded I then strip out all scripting to keep any programs
from running and save the stripped down version as a .html file in the folder
made in your default folder titled Breaking News.

Once I have created an html page I have also stripped out all tags from the
page and formed a text only file of all the text, or I should say almost all
the text on the page inside tags and such and there posted in a text file.

Now, when forming those 2 files I also extract out all link text and place
that in a list in the order the links are seen in the page.
That link list is what gets displayed on the screen in list view form.
Note: I added the option for list or detail in the view menu, hitting the Alt-V
and V again will toggle that mode and tell you what setting you are in.

Now you can either just look at the heading which was inside the link, or both
the heading and link. URL is said after the heading since in detail mode the
header for the column is read.

Now, once you have the list made and displayed you can go down the list
using the down arrow or use a fast first letter search. I have not added a sort
ascending/descending or string search function yet, that is last of my
priorities at the moment. Any sort does not affect the stored array of links
since the data field of the list still has that pointer value.

So, when traveling down the list at any time you can go to the web page by
using the Alt-G hotkey, or going to the file menu and hitting the G key.

Or, when on a heading you want to view all the links of then you use a
different hotkey which is Alt-L for load and or use the File Menu hitting the L
key there also.

This feature loads the link you are on. Now, if no display there is a
default page placed in the text field. So using the same hotkeys above you will
get the same result.
Note:
If you want to change the default or at any time not use a link on the
list, tab once into the edit field and make your change then tab again, or use
the Alt-D hotkey and that edit field entry will be used and either you go to it
or load it for viewing.

Note:
Some links at the moment do not have a heading inside there link tag, sad,
but true, and in that case you may find holes in the list where there is
nothing but there is.
In that case you can look at the link either by going to detail mode and see it
or using the Alt-E hotkey which will load the link into the text edit field and
you are placed in the edit box to see it or edit it if so desire.

Now to change the default URL for your program so when powering up or
turning it on the next time you just use the Alt-S save hotkey or in the file
menu hit the S key.

I hope this gives you a better understanding of what is going on. In the
future there will be an immediate text field of or a message box pop-up of the
web page. I prefer a text field. At the moment it is save as a text file under
the name you see on the list and only over-written if you download the same
link with the same name and some things on that page may have changed, thus
loosing something, maybe.

I do not have to save a copy and may leave that as an option for the text
is already in memory under a PageText variable as is the link list. An array is
also made for the links only since if you are not in detail mode you can not
get those links, I save them in an array as I am making the list and the row
number for each is the same...

The only problem that comes up is when saving a file and the web page is
Unicode or UTF8 and that is an easy fix, either don't save the page or just
change the flag for saving the file to accommodate the file type; low priority
at the moment.

    I hope this helps.

        Bruce

Hi Bruce:
I still dont get it, just a little thick I guess.
1) You have a URL pointing to a Webpage with News Items on it.
You can easily fire up that page in the users default browser but that is
just a link to a webpage and the user can just put it on their Desktop so
guessing this is not what you are talking about.
2) You could download the Webpage into your program, parse the links out and
display them in something like a ListBox with each link being the URL to a
target News Item.
Unless you are using RSS Feeds or a News Aggrigator these are the 2 main
functions I see as being behind a design at the basic level.
Does this make sense in terms of your project?
Is this what you are doing?
