You do not need a log4j jar on the client.

However, it looks like maven is trying to rebuild gwt-log from source. Maven
may or may not be doing the right thing there as gwt-log uses a combination
of server and client side versions of the same log files. I'd highly
recommend reconfiguring maven to not do this.

gwt-log-x.x.x.jar ships with ServerLogImplLog4J.java and
ServerLogImplLog4J.class
(precompiled).
