Joel,
I know this will sound ridiculous but there was a crash that destroyed a
nice bike and after initial refusal to cover it under homeowners insurance
the adjuster agreed to cover it under the "Falling Objects" clause less
deductable. The adjuster must have been a biker to go that far. There was
truth to it since the offending crasher did fall on the bike. This was 15+
years ago and of course they may be much smarter now. Just call the agent
and get him to tell you what they will cover and ask him specifically about
this event. I was going to insure mine and the "rider" coverage was very
expensive so I did not get it.

Speaking of insurance, does anyone know about damage coverage for
bicycles? According to my homeowners policy, my bikes are only covered for
theft, damage due to fire, etc. and was wondering if there was anything
out there that was sort of like auto insurance.

Well, the way it was told to me is that the insurance is for bodily or
property damage due to the negligence of a rider or riders during a
club ride. An example would be hitting a mailbox or causing a car
accident where someone is injured. Of course, a car accident caused
by our negligence would have to be proved because most of what we see
is negligence on the part of drivers.
The waiver is to cover each other just as it would be when you sign a
waiver for any of the charity rides. I guess you could say it's to
protect us from ourselves.
I am not aware of any secondary medical insurance but that does not
mean that it dosen't exist.
Hope that helps. Any further questions, we can redirect to the
insurance company.
