On my dressmaking dummy are new attempts at Norwegian stays about 1718 and
1750. Lots of pins, cursing and why?!?

I am part of 2 re-enactment groups located in or around Oslo in 1718-ish
and the 1750s. Population of Oslo about 5000 and the capital. There is next
to no female garments surviving from the urban areas. The countryside is
lagging about 50-100 years behind, so extant pieces are almost useless.
There are written Norwegian and Danish sources and some Dutch paintings to
go on which helps. And to top it, stays were mostly covered by this time.
Also, Norway was dirt poor due to a century of warfare in Europe with heavy
taxation and a mini ice age. Fun fact, some glaziers expanded about 80 to
150 m a year during the early 1700s. It was a bit nippy to put it mildly.
If I put on all the layers of wool worn most of the year then, I would not
freeze outside in -20 C now. All this is worn during the one part of the
year when Scandinavia is warmer than the Mediterranean. Which explains the
why?!? I have opted for being a pot scrubber = wearing the least possible
layers of wool. Which means a visible stay in camp....

Please reactivate the list so I can procrastinate, I am going nuts here. I
have a dissertation worth of books to read just figure out how out of date
Oslo is at this time... :-D
