If we can stand one more "thread" on fibers/fabrics--not all  
manmade/synthetic fabrics are the same, either.  Those curtains might very  
well have been 
rayon, or a rayon/acetate blend. I've seen home decorating ribbed  fabrics made 
of these fibers.  And rayon, of course, being cellulose, like  cotton, won't 
make you swelter. If fact, it absorbs moisture even better than  cotton, hence 
the fact that it also wrinkles like crazy.  Acetate, though,  being chemically 
modified cellulose, is not as comfy in hot humid weather.   Many synthetic 
satins and taffetas are also made out of acetate, although  polyester seems to 
be gaining ground.
