I've rigged up a system at home that works sometimes.  You need a dark  thin 
plate with holes in it.  Run a bunch of fibers (you need to untwist  the 
yarns) through the hole, then seal the two sides with nail polish (we had a  
different sealant in lab class but clear nail polish is a home  substitute).  
Let 
dry, then shave off both sides very thinly with a  single-edged razor blade.  
I've been successful with this technique about  50% of the time.
