How do you get the cross-section in a nonprofessional setup? I have used my microscope on fibers, but have never figured out how to see anything but the side view. I've rigged up a system at home that works sometimes. You need a dark thin plate with holes in it. Run a bunch of fibers (you need to untwist the yarns) through the hole, then seal the two sides with nail polish (we had a different sealant in lab class but clear nail polish is a home substitute). Let dry, then shave off both sides very thinly with a single-edged razor blade. I've been successful with this technique about 50% of the time.
