Kimberley,

My son works in lighting. He says, "The longer a lightbulb is left "on," the longer the life it will have. If you keep turning the switch "on and off" the bulbs wear out quicker. Also when you replace a bulb, the switch should be "off." If the switch is "on" when you replace the bulb, it shortened the lifespan a great deal. You might also want to pay attention to the wattage of the bulb and the wattage for the socket. If you put to high of a bulb wattage, the bulb will burn out quicker and possibly could cause a fire."

We have a light over our kitchen sink that stays on non-stop. The bulb lasts about six years. We have been in this house for eight years and have only changed it once. The light has been on every day and night for all those years.
