Sorry, but that's untrue, although it's an incredibly commonly believed myth, and one of my pet hates about re-enactment.


Ah, thanks. My source seems to be very out of date, then. I'd read that many uniforms were made at home to army specs, which accounted for a certain amount of variance in cut and appearance among the troops.
