Are you sure?  Remember that these waistcoats were usually embroidered  flat, 
and then cut out and made up, so there could have been some variation in  how 
it was done.  I admit, it seems I usually don't see it that way, but  rather 
with the embroidery lapped and therefore "off center," which looks  strange to 
modern eyes.  So you may be right that this is a modern  adjustment for 
modern esthetics.
 
And, even though it didn't answer Bjarne's question, I was glad to have the  
information about easing the curved front edge of the coat.  I have no  
immediate plans to make an 18th century coat but, if I ever do, I'll remember  
that!
