I disagree. Just look at the 1st gowns in the Kyoto book. And there are  
period written accounts about the skills of tailors matching fabrics.
Of course lots of piecing goes on....especially if the gown is cut from  
another gown [and I'll bet the original gown matched], but I bet a lot of 
effort  
went into disguising piecing and matching things up whenever  possible.
