Definitely! My first Costume History teacher, Fran Mayhew at the
University of Delaware, made a point of using several sources and
looking out for the inaccuracies in the source.
Regarding movies, one friend assigned a project of reporting on the
costumes from a movie of their choice. They could discuss what's
right and what isn't, and perhaps also track down the original
sources for specific costumes - portraits and the like.
At the region 6 Costume Society of America meeting, they had (and
will have again) "Hollywood Huzzas and Howlers". People could bring
their favorite Best & Worst of film costume.
