For two semesters, I had my students watch the 1940s "Pride and Prejudice," costumed by Adrian in exaggerated 1830s styles, and asked them "what's wrong with this picture," assuming that the costumes should have been contemporary with when it was published (I know, I know--we just got into that recently--1790s vs 1810s; but still, both very different from 1830s). I didn't tell them when it was published, and maybe that was the problem--they didn't bother to find out. Anyway, no one caught that the 1830s silhouette was very different from the 1810s one!!
