When I 1st read your pattern problems, I thought "She's making a bustle  
gown.".
 
Some advice....even though I haven't seen the patterns your working with.  If 
its the draped skirts that are confusing you, it's sometimes better  to 
glance at the overall pattern piece, and just drape it up yourself to  get the 
look 
you want. Just take a piece of muslin and play with it. It's very  helpful 
because sometimes it's like tying your shoe: It easier to do than to  describe. 
It's very instructive just taking like a straight length, gathering  one end 
and pining it to the dummy and pulling it up here and there to see how  it 
acts. It can be fun too.
