     I was in a Roman reenactment group for a while.  The crest on the
helmet is a brush made of horsehair, not feathers.  If you're on a
budget and just giving the impression of the look, why not just make
the crest shape out of cardboard and paint it red?

     There is a church near me that does a Bethlehem walk every other
year.  They actually had the soldiers from the reenactment group
volunteer to participate and harass the populace.  The only
difficulty is that hobnails are very slippery on linoleum.
