It happens to have been one of the first costume books I read. 

My recollection is that it's not bad.  It uses redrawings almost exclusively, 
but they're good redrawings that give a reasonably accurate idea of the 
period silhouette.  However, it's weak in ancient and medieval costume and 
gives most attention to the 16th through 19th centuries.  There is also a 
chapter that gives suggestions for fabric choices for various period costumes 
for theatrical purposes.  Since the choices are geared to how the costumes 
would look under stage lights and not to reenactment purposes, it may be less 
useful for some members of this list.
