I've had good luck with the liquid called, I believe, Sewer's Aide, when stitching the glued-on sequin type fabrics. You put a drop of it on the machine needle and it keeps the gunk from building up. That might help. I do think the idea of gluing the hem is a good one, though, if you can find a really waterproof glue.
