Oh, what a fun (?) trip down memory lane! Elementary and Jr. High (60-69) were spent in Vermont. I remember making my first drop waisted dress for the 6th grade (65-66) dance. I wasn't allowed to hem it as high as I wanted, nor was I allowed the white go-go boots.
I do remember that girls were not allowed to wear pants to school, even in winter. We did not have school buses and all winter we would walk around with wrinkled dresses from stuffing the skirts down the legs of our snow suits. In the spring there was one day we were allowed Burmuda shorts, but the hem had to be just above the knee. I do know that boys were not allowed to wear jeans to school. My father was a professor at the University of Vermont and I was surrounded by grad students all the time. I remember the fringed leather jackets, love beads, sandals, dashiki tops, and shopping at the Army Navy surplus for bell bottoms. This is where I got hooked on costume - UVM had a wonderful Shakespeare Theatre. I remember learning to knit on huge needles with rug yarn to make mail shirts. When they were done they were painted with metallic paint. In 69 we moved to the Virginia side of DC. I will never forget my first drive through Georgetown! Talk about hippie city! Girls were allowed pant suits in my Junior year (70-71). Our choir uniforms (Princess style dress over pants)were made from that horrendous double knit fabric. Can you say sweat factory?? Double knit under stage lights - not pretty! Boys were allowed long hair, but facial hair wasn't allowed until 71-72. I remember my husband with huge mutton chop sideburns that skated on the edge of the rules because there was a gap of about 4 inches over his chin. Senior year he filled in the gap and added a mustache which has stayed ever since. The beard comes and goes, but the 'stache is forever. I remember spending the summer before college sewing dresses and jumpers that I never wore. College was jeans and smock tops. Take that back, I did wear a dress during orientation week. Chancellor's Tea we had to wear a dress with stockings and gloves. Imagine stockings and gloves in the humidity of a Virginia summer! Ah, well. Hope that helps.
