1. Mini-skirts:
2. Girls' pants: When were girls' allowed to wear pants to school. Pants-suits, hiphuggers?
3. Boys' Hair: Allowed to wear long hair
>> 4. Boy's mustaches: When allowed
Abraham Lincoln Public High School, San Francisco, CA, Class of 1969 - mini skirts I made myself a dirndle miniskirt in jr. high -1963-64? - and got in trouble for it but my mom said that knees weren't a bad thing and I could wear it and that school couldn't punish me. I shouldn't have worn it, I was short and the waistband was only about 3x the length of the skirt, not an attractive outfit now that I think of it. My mom and I have laughed about it since. But after 1964 we could wear them as long as our underwear didn't show. But we had to go tot the water fountain in pairs - one to bend down to drink and one to "block the view."
- the first year that girls pants are officially allowed.
1966 we could wear pants to school. My parents didn't allow me to wear jeans to school so I kept a pair in my locker and wore them. Pant suit were WAY later than that. Although I remember the winter that my church allowed pantsuits for women; it was cold in church and the older ladies complained that it physically hurt them to be in church in anything less. God bowed to old ladies' joints.
- long hair? sure; many guys were known by the fact they had long hair. side burns and mustaches? only a few were actually able to grow them. Our school president, the valedictorian of the class before mine, wasn't allowed to get into Disneyland at the Senior field trip because of his long hair and Van Dyke beard, in spite of his button-down shirt and Hush Puppies.
- fringed jackets: Oh, yeah, especially in group I hung out with. We all wore suede; I even had a suede wrap around mini-skirt, burgundy, that my dad gave me for Christmas when I was 16. I loved that skirt!
and another one: transition from stockings/garters to pantyhose: 1966 maybe? also:
hip-huggers I had in college, but not high school. I had a pair of Army/Navy surplus 13-button wool pants that I wore. We loved them - I wore them high school to college when my boyfriend helped me and washed them in with the jeans and shrunk them. Hey! They're blue, they're pants, they wash with the jeans! Penny, I love this subject. Finally something I know really well...
