If you answer these questions, please let me know your location and the app. year you remember these fashions were worn to public elementary through high school:

1. Mini-skirts: Girl's skirt lengths were measured
2. Girls' pants: When were girls' allowed to wear pants to school. Pants-suits, hiphuggers?
3. Boys' Hair: Allowed to wear long hair
4. Boy's mustaches: When allowed

We moved from Wisconsin to Windsor, Massachusetts for the 1963-65 school years while my parents taught at a private school (I remember doing my homework by the fireplace during the great blackout of the eastern seaboard in 1965). My siblings and I attended public schools, however. I remember rolling up the waistband of my skirts like the 8th grade girls did, but I don't remember anyone checking the lengths, generally we didn't go much more than 3-4 inches above the knee.

By the time we moved to Ridgefield, Connecticut for '65-'66 school year, the older girls were wearing mini-skirts. Much to my shock, so were some of their mothers!

In 1966 we moved back to Wisconsin and it was back to rolling up my waistband again until about '68 or'69, when they finally relaxed most of the dress codes and allowed "slacks" ("pants", at least for girls, meant underwear). I remember wearing hip-hugging bell bottoms by about 1970. My brothers were wearing long hair while we were out east, and at least one of them had a mustache and goatee (this would have been his Junior year in HS), say 1965.

HTH,
Laurie
