I am still using the Gutermann, and so far, no problems.

Hey Sharon,

I have an old Kenmore (purchased new mid-1970s) and I use almost only
Gutermann thread. I never have any trouble. I've used the Metro-something
and had problems. I think it really depends on your machine, and I believe
the new ones are fussier than the old ones.
Heck, it ran on Coats & Clark for years and ran just fine.
