Hi all! I may be going to a masque ball with a London in 1790 setting in
a few months, and I'm wondering what sets masquerade clothes and
accessories apart from regular clothing in the 1780's and 90's. Is there
anything published on this specific subject, or any relevant web pages?
I've tried to google for sites and books but have come up short.
The very few contemporary pictures I've found look like people wore
normal party wear and just added masks, but somehow that strikes me as
odd. I would appreciate any info on this. :)

People did not necessarily wear what we would consider "fancy dress".
They frequently wore evining clothes, and a "domino" over. This was a
hooded cloak, for both men and women. There are patterns for both,
taken from original garments, in "Period Costume for Stage and
Screen - Outer Garments Book 1" which includes Coats, cloaks, capes,
and mantles. A mask would be worn with this cloak. There was a
convention that if you were masked and cloaked, you were not recognised.
I can't access the other information I have right now, but if you
want any more info, just let me know.
