Beadnet dress
Egyptian, Old Kingdom, Dynasty 4, reign of Khufu, 2551–2528 B.C.
Findspot: Giza, Egypt
Length x width: 113 x 44 cm (44 1/2 x 17 5/16 in.)
Faience
Classification: Costumes
On view in the: Egyptian Old Kingdom (Hetepheres) Gallery
The main body of the dress consists of faience beads strung in a
lozenge pattern. A line of dark blue cylinder beads marks the division
between the skirt and the bodice. The halter-shaped bodice consists of
alternating rows of cylinder beads and the lozenge pattern. Light and
dark blue floral beads hang from the bottom edge of the garment.

This portion of a bead net dress was reconstructed from approximately
7,000 beads found in an undisturbed burial (see photographs). Although
their string had disintegrated, a few beads still lay in their
original pattern. Such garments are frequently shown on painted
statues or in tomb wall scenes (see drawing), but this is the earliest
surviving actual example of such a garment.
