The trouble with that is that silk taffeta has water soluble sizing so it's
not going to be as stiff after washing.

Well, yes, all silk (except maybe noil) does, to a certain extent. It might, or might not, be a problem. Thing is, you won't know until you try it with your particular piece of fabric. Also, to give it back some of its crispiness, add some vinegar to the rinse water.
