Hi Lauren,

I have washed silk taffeta for my Tudor kirtle, and it stinks from the heavy
chemicals that make it smooth. The smell went away once it dried. It now has
wrinkles with little fine wrinkles that in my outfit has never smoothed out
perfectly, even with my new tank Rowenta steam iron. But the kirtle is now
washable, and water spots don't stay now (important for me when I end up eating
in public repasts). It is a little softer, has that mini-wrinkled look, and
didn't shrink all that much. I can now machine wash the kirtle I made with it,
but it does make me think twice about buying taffeta, since that smell was
strong and the wrinkles are a little annoying.

BTW, not all silk taffeta does the mini-wrinkle thing. One of my other taffetas
did not do that on the small test swatch, and was not as stinky, but I haven't
washed up the whole fabric yet. I am still debating what to do with it, since
the fabric was bought for an Elizabethan tall hat.

Kimiko
