A trick I learned to keep an antique straw hat from becoming brittle, was to
lightly mist it with water from a spray bottle. I had all the straw hats on
stands and walked down the aisle misting them. If the hat has a tight weave
and a cotton lining, you might mist the inside too. Test a small area for
color-fast if it is lined. You don't want to mess up a nice hat with
running dyes.
I have washed several straw hats with soap had great success.
