Both buttons and zippers were in use by this time. Buttons require a little more plackett work but always sit better. If you are after a more formal or up-market look, I'd suggest buttons.
As a side thought, with zippers relatively new to the scene then, I wonder how fancy they might have been seen as or how much of a gimmick, -C. > would have had a buttoned fly or already zippers in 1933.
