And if you do apply anything to the form, use a small paint brush or Q-tip
to get only on the metal

Don't use WD-40. If you have to use some kind of lubricant, use a
silicon-based one that won't stain (Giga-A-Loo comes to mind, if that's
available in your area). I guess sewing machine oil would also be much
cleaner (and less toxic!) than WD-40.

The best thing you could do, though, is take the thing apart and give all
rusted pieces a good scrub with a steel wool pad first to get rid of the
rust.
