I've read everyone's helpful replies to this, but what I'd say is: Go
ahead and make 13th-century garb and wear it.

There is a pattern in Alcega for "a gown for a learned man" -- but what would a 12th century gown look like?
From what I understand, the 12th-13th century version of a scholar's gown--the cappa clausa -- looked more or less like a long hooded poncho with a slit in front for the hands.
