They'll take up just as much fabric, box pleats are just knife pleats with one half pointing one way and the other half pointing the other. They still use approx three times the length. The original really does seem to blend elements from the 1840s to 1860s! very pretty though, but I am partial to the use of a single colour and using textural details to give interest.
