I graduated from High School (in the South, which tends to run late in fashion
trends) in 1968. I remember one girl being sent home from school two days in a
row - once for wearing a mini-skirt which was too short (It had to touch the
floor when we knelt.) and the next day for wearing a maxi-skirt. They called
it a "distraction." And, of course, we weren't allowed to wear pants at all.
