Watched on DVR tonight. Was prepared to be entertained, Watson is a much better realized character than earlier versions.
I think Watson often gets short shrift. However, he plays a vital part in Holmes's investigations, including giving medical information on both the dead, and the traumatized or injured but still living. It's been a long time since I read Doyle's stories, but in some movie versions the advantages of Watson's "bedside manner" are clear. He has the people skills to provide the sympathy for distress, and tolerance of meanderings, needed to most effectively get information from clients, witnesses, etc. Holmes just wants to get straight to the point. I've always thought Doyle, himself a physician, may have empathized more with Watson than with Holmes.
I am going to order a DVD of the new "Sherlock" and I already ordered a set of the Russian series.
