Since I've been starting to look at custom content types, I'd thought I'd add my 2 cents. While the technical implementation is still beyond my ability to comment on at the moment, I can still describe the scenario I'm looking at and you guys can see how it might fit.
In my example, I have a gallery as a new content type (collection of photos and folders). From a users perspective, I would probably provide something *page like* for viewing and navigating the gallery. However, as I add folders, I may want to display them as a post to anounce that they are new. In both cases, I envisioned that this would be done with something like template tags in a page and in the posts. With that approach, there really isn't any automatic viewing. The second part of my example is a photo as another content type (obviously referenced by the folders mentioned above). Similar to above, they would be viewed in the gallery or embedded in posts. The value in making both of these new content types, is they get all the benefits that posts and pages get like comments, etc. I guess what I'm getting at (perhaps not clearly) is that there may be content types that don't get displayed automatically but instead are triggered by something else like a real post or page. I don't know if I've really added much to the discussion, but hopefully provided some nuggets of a different perspective to chew on. Bill NOTE TO SELF: It may be neat though to have an folders display like pages when they are created as sort of an auto notification.
