Hi Pepijn, and welcome. There was a basic design decision made to put as little in core as possible, leaving plugins to care out many tasks or provide extra features That said , there is work being done on supplying something similar to widgets.
In order to become a core plugin, plugins generally must be useful to the majority of people who will use Habari, and serve an educational function in showing how to do the tasks required in developing a plugin. As such, to be accepted as a core plugin is difficult. Progress is slow, but there is work being done on creating a plugin/ theme directory. http://habariproject.org/en/explore/plugins shows a very early version. The work being done is based on the plugin_directory and the hmp plugins in the habari-extras repository. I'm sure assistance with those would be greatly appreciated.
