The version may or may not be communicated in the generator meta tag or the atom / APP feed. I've never considered that a particular risk, since people attempting to exploit it will likely try en masse, regardless of the version you claim.
We get the version already during the update beacon process (how else would we tell you there is an update?), but that obviously would not be included in the directory.
