Although I haven't had a chance to check it, Rick C has kindly added a changeset to fix my original bug (upload button & thumbnails not displayed on local media silo).
However, you need to be running the latest SVN revision (and not 0.5.1) to get this fix. I'll post back when I have tested the change.
