I'm relatively new to habari but I wanted to let the group know
that I'll be doing some user testing on it as a part of a usability
assignment for my university degree. I intend to test two groups of
users (with four people in each); the first group will have had previous
experience with a CMS or blogging site and the second group will have
had no previous experience. I'm only testing the web interface so I will
be doing all of the installation myself. Tests will run for 40-60 minutes.

This sounds great! I'm very interested in the outcome of this.

I'm happy to take suggestions if there is something in particular that
you would like me to test? Also, I haven't decided yet whether I should
use 0.6.4 or the trunk (although strongly I'm leaning towards the trunk
because it will give you the most up-to-date feedback). The major
difference seems to be the areas/blocks in the themes... is this ready
to be tested with users? Are there other differences between UI's?

I think your initial list is a great set of tests.

A couple of additional tests you could try:
* Change the theme
* Add a "contributor" user (someone who contributes, but doesn't have admin powerz)

I think you're probably better off using 0.7/trunk, precisely for the reason that the feedback will be more useful. The areas/blocks features are a little sketchy from a UI point of view. I worry about what real users will think of them, but then, feedback on that is the only thing that will drive what should be done to fix it, right?

On a different topic, I thought I'd make the suggestion that when it
comes to choosing themes for the base version of Habari they each be
designed to fit a different type of users needs. In other words, the aim
would be to identify some key types of users and have it so that these
types could activate a theme and get started on Habari without having to
look under the hood.

We've talked on several occasions about packing Habari so that you can enable it for a purpose all at once rather than having to configure it through a number a steps to accomplish a specific goal. This continues to be a good idea, I think.
