It occured to me quite a lot that the Nvidia drivers caused the X server to
hang. Using the X non-3d-accelerated open-source "nv" drivers solves the
problem. You can try playing with some of the options that are documented in
the Nvidia driver README file. (Search for "Option" with a capital O).
