The problem was solved with the help of this link 
http://ggts.net/2008/05/13/reading-files-needed-to-boot/.
While re-sizing my partitions I had moved the swap but the old UUID was 
still in /etc/fstab and  /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume.
