With so called “stable distributions” (as Debian/Ubuntu), it should be
updated automatically only when it has been installed manually (= not as
a package).

The idea about stability is that “automatic updates” should only be for
security or major bug reasons, not for new versions, else the software
may change the system behavior => it would not keep stable.
It lies on the developement process of the Debian project.
As you said, "stable" really means it, anything else falls onto testing
and unstable.
IMO, Canonical copies the latters and builds Ubuntu!? (Need C&C)
If you installed Thunderbird through the package manager, then you'll
have to wait
I think he can type configure && make && make install :)
