Yep. But with Debian I only have to do this every 2-3 years.

It lies on the developement process of the Debian project.

Yep, Ubuntu is build from testing/unstable copy every 6 month.
I think he can type configure&& make&& make install :)
No need to build Thunderbird: one could just download a binary image for
Linux.
But, people, be careful about the profile migration!!
One your profile has been migrated to version 3.0, you may not be able
to run the version 2.0 anymore!
So, if it's only to give it a try, better do it inside a different
account than your usual one.
