            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------

The College Tour hits the "Road to War" at Georgetown University tonight and make no
mistake about it folks, we're on that road and there doesn't appear to be many stop
signs or even yellow lights ahead (Europeans and the UN excepted of course)...Chris
will spend the hour with Bill Arkin, Wayne Downing, Barry McCaffrey (all MSNBC
military expert dudes and well known to you Hardballers) and veteran war correspondent
Peter Arnett...

If you saw the HBO movie "Live from Baghdad" about Gulf War I you'll know they
portrayed Peter as a "Robert Duvall in Apocalypse Now" type of character in his zeal
to cover the war...

The layout of the show roughly will be military strategy and tactics in the A
block...Who'll fight the war/draft in B/C (speaking of the topic, Rumsfeld issued an
apology yesterday for saying draftees in Vietnam "added no value" to the fight...Story
below)....In the D block Shuster's package will deal with civilian deaths in war and
how accountable our troops should or shouldn't be for such accidents...A discussion
will flow thereafter...

In the e/f block we'll look at the diplomatic and political roadblocks the
administration may encounter as it prosecutes this war..

As promised, Mortman's dispatch from the NARAL, excuse me, NARAL Pro-Choice dinner...

Oh, the crab cakes! Oh, the cattle call! Oh, the cut, clarity, and five-carat confab
at the Omni Shoreham hotel. NARAL set a new high mark for taking care of "Hardball"
staff last night by including us in the pre-dinner private reception. In addition to
devouring the strolling crab cakes, we spotted strolling personalities --
deep-throated Kathleen Turner ("Body Heat," "Romancing the Stone," "V.I. Warshawki"),
intense-eyed Ed Harris ("The Right Stuff," "The Truman Show," "A Beautiful Mind"),
distinguished Ossie Davis ("12 Angry Men," "School Daze," "Joe Versus The Volcano")
and the night's top crowd pleaser and best speaker, the Rev. Al Sharpton ("Tawana
Brawley.") We loved taking home the souvenir red, white, and blue glow sticks. Memo
to future cattle callers and banquet sponsors -- treat us with the same level of
respect and comfort, and The Hardball Briefing will be very, very pleased.

The official Hardball water cooler Buzz gave the nod to Dean in exciting the base last
night at the dinner...
